Chief Josh Janssen began his fire service career in 1992 with the Riverside County Fire Department as a Volunteer Firefighter. He also served with the U.S. Forest Service for four years, gaining valuable experience on an Engine Company and as a member of a Hotshot crew. In 1996, he joined CAL FIRE (then CDF) as a Firefighter I and steadily advanced through the ranks, serving as Firefighter II, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief, Division Chief, Deputy Chief, and ultimately retiring as the Department’s Staff Chief of Communications and Emergency Incident Awareness at Sacramento Headquarters.Over the course of his distinguished 33-year career, Chief Janssen maintained a strong focus on training and safety. He contributed to over 30 Cadres, Committees, and Working Groups, including the Department’s PPE Working Group, serving as a Technical Panel Member with UL/NIST, participating on FEMA’s USAR Task Force 6, and holding multiple
Type I positions on CAL FIRE’s Incident Management Teams, culminating in his role as an Incident Commander.
Chief Janssen has extensive expertise in structural and wildland fire control, serious accident reviews, training and safety programs, and State Fire Training initiatives.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Chief Janssen is deeply dedicated to his family. He is a proud father to three children: Ryan (19), Jet (17), and Pace (13), and has been married to his wife Natalie for 21 years. He holds two Associate Degrees, one in Fire Science and another in EMS, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration.
Josh’s personal and professional goals center on being a great father, husband, and community leader, as well as fostering a supportive and growth-oriented environment for his colleagues in the fire service and the public.
